How to see your Claude Code usage limits (5-hour and 7-day)

See how much of your 5-hour and weekly Claude usage you have used and when it resets, with /usage, a status line script, or a Mac panel.

If you use Claude Code with a Claude subscription, you have a usage limit that resets every 5 hours and another that resets every 7 days. Hitting one in the middle of a task is frustrating, so it helps to see both at a glance.

Option 1: the /usage command

Type /usage in Claude Code to see how much you have used and when each limit resets. It is accurate, but you have to remember to ask.

Option 2: a status line

Claude Code can show a status line under the prompt. It runs your command and passes it information as JSON, including rate_limits.five_hour.used_percentage and rate_limits.seven_day.used_percentage. Save this as ~/.claude/statusline.sh (it uses jq) and make it executable:

Then point Claude Code to it in ~/.claude/settings.json:

The numbers update each time Claude replies, and you see them only inside that terminal tab.

Option 3: in a panel beside your terminal

Alien Desk shows your 5-hour and 7-day usage and reset times in its menu, and can keep them at the top of its panel. It connects through the same status line, keeps your own status line exactly as it was, and you can turn it off at any time. This part is free.
